Floyd Bennett Field's future

Very rarely do I ever post anything out of the ordinary outside the sphere for this blog I cover for birds but I want to bring your urgent attention to this matter that affects a famous birding location close to the heart of Brooklyn birders and their neighboring birders as well.

Go to these links below to see what entails for Floyd Bennett . Over the years , recreational activities and increase in cars and motorcycle traffic have diminished Floyd Bennett's value as well as a threat to the last remaining extensive grasslands in Brooklyn. The creation of Aviation Sports complex from a year ago simply opened the door for possibly more development. "give an inch, they will want a mile".  Read on and hopefully  you will be able to attend the critical 9/21 meeting.A high turnout by birders and preservationists will do wonders ..It is everyone's concern and your preserve as well before the Blue Ribbon Panel gets any ideas for more maybe baseball fields ?

If anyone who doesn't know, Floyd Bennett is a decommissioned airport that was turned over to Gateway Park ( under National Park Service)  . It is a terrific birding area for grassland species and raptors , especially in the winter. It sits at the end of Flatbush Ave , just before the Marine Park Bridge.

Prospect 8/31 All quiet...too hot

This heat wave ( hopefully short!) stunts migration so it's all quiet on the birders front. This morning, i spotted a Common Nighthawk flying circles over Maryland Monument/Lookout hill at 803 AM. Other reports, from Rob Bate and Keir also report very little bird activity. We just have to wait for the next northerly front.

In the meantime, Hurricane Earl is heading towards us, predicted to skim the coastline. That will be interesting , maybe it will throw a petrel or albatross unto Prospect Lake ;)>  ..That would be something. ( and for sea-birders, it's the best time to station yourself at a coastal spot for a sea watch for all kinds of pelagic birding potential).

Prospect 8/30

Early report for Prospect was Rob Bate (8/30 9:53 am)reporting 12 species warblers along south shore of Prospect Lake this morning, including drab Cape May, Pine and female Wilson's. Likely these were birds from the weekend that sort of halted at an imaginary "STOP SIGN"  since the lake south shore is only about 200 feet from Parkside Ave and the scarce tree Parade Grounds. Last year about this time or maybe a little later, there was a fallout of warblers that persisted for a few days , mostly from Duck Island to Three Sisters. I'll keep an eye on this spot  and perhaps you as well.

Also this morning, the Arrowwood shrub right next to the Binnen Bridge ( waterfall) was a little active, due to the abundant blue fruit available. I had Red-eyed Vireos, Magnolia Warbler, Least Flycatcher ( it consumed a berry!) , Catbird, and maybe another interesting vireo that was obscured by foliage. Its a great shrub , one that a few years back a Philadelphia Vireo hung out for a few days, consuming the berries.

Kingsboider note:  looks like 15 species warblers today. ______________________________________________

Prospect 8/29 "Quiet sightings" :)>

Warm as it was today, still good activity continued, whether a group saw birds or a few people. If you birded in the morning , you were spared the ear-splitting deejay music from the Nethermead special event that I and Mary E were subjected to after noontime. It appears today's warbler tally reached 18 species..perhaps all came for the concert....(maybe with earplugs)

Hilights included a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, evening COMMON NIGHTHAWK movement,  and the Brooklyn Bird Club tally of 16 species warblers among their productive observations. But a good one was a perched Nighthawk , not often seeing that for sure.

Beginning first with the Common Nighthawks. Mary E and Peter , enjoying a BBQ dinner in Steve and Heidi Nanz's backyard were all treated to a show of Common Nighthawks, a total of 9 in a flock overhead at their northern Windsor Terrace home. Abundant Chimney Swifts joined in the evening flight starting 7:25 pm.

Earlier in the afternoon, as Peter and Mary dealt with the very loud music from the Michael Jackson deejay event, a PHILADELPHIA VIREO worked its way thru an oak tree above the gate that access the isthmus between the Lower and Upper Pools. A few warbler species were seen , namely CANADA before the Vale, both NORTHERN and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH chasing each other for territorial rights of the Vale Cashmere's pool. Quite some action there.

But best results came today from Tom Stephenson's Brooklyn Bird Club walk that tallied 16 species warblers.Among the good ones: CAPE MAY,BLACKBURNIAN, PINE, BAY BREASTED BLACKPOLL to note.

Kingsboider note :
Tom will be leading the first Thursday walk  9/2 at 7 am from Grand Army Plaza park entrance.

Please note another Thursday walk has been added , that led by Peter Dorosh 9/30 from Bartel Pritchard park entrance , also at 7 am ( as all September Thursdays)

Here are observations sent to me:

Tom Stephenson's BBC walk tally

Hi Peter,

We had a very good group today, 15 very patient people! The day started very slowly with very few birds. Even our initial tour of Lookout yielded very few warblers.
However persistence eventually paid off, as well as the skills of the participants, and we ended up with 16 species of warblers and some other really good birds (like perched Common Nighthawk thanks to keen eye of Janet Schumacher)

I think the sound check for the concert drove the really good birds over to the lullwater....including Pine and Bay-breasted....

Here's the list with a few comments.

Best regards,
Tom

Prospect August 28th

Word i received was that Prospect still is producing good birding, with quality sightings to behold. I was not in the park , having to lead the BBC on "Shorebird Odyssey" trip today. But despite warm weather, birds are moving thru, not in great numbers but if you are patient enough and keen eyed, you should see fall migrants.Lookout Hill was described good for birds today -13 warbler species at least (at least 15 overall in the park)--so perhaps Lookout should be a first go to spot early morning in this heat. A good warbler there was CAPE MAY, along with Blackburnian, Bluewinged and Prairie to report. From Rob's report, interesting to see good movement by Veery Thrushes.Worm-eating Warbler ,Willow Flycatcher and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher as good birds were also reported

here are the following reports:

Prospect August 27th various reports , very good bird diversity with cumulative effort

The Kingsboider word: Migration stalled today early on from yesterday's northerly front for numbers, but picked up steam from various reports I received  thru the day.Several quality ones so far as I heard and read...latest after various reports I read looks like today was a really terrifc day with hard earned effort from several birders....see the reports below. Its a looker!

Kingsboider note:  latest report is 15-16 species warbler today for both PP and BBG by cumulative effort...  I am too tired to count after tonights Cyclones game.

Broadwinged Hawk was reported by Rob Bate at about 9:55 am over the Wellhouse

Tenneessee Warbler reported by Rob Jett at Lily Pool just before 3pm.

Alex Wilson reported 12 species warblers in his morning walk. But later when he emailed me,  BOBOLINK and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER raises the stakes.

I had the pleasure of seeing a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER bathing , at times just sitting in the water in the Ambergill creek on the south side of the Ravine's Esdale Bridge. Then a CANADA WARBLER walked right by it. That occurred about 8 ish. There were at least 3 Canada's I saw thruout the morning while busy working.

Orrin Tilevitz BBGarden walk included Great Crested FC and Nashville Warbler.

Mary Eyster reported singing CAROLINA WREN in her northern Windsor Terrace backyard.

Eddie reports Scarlet Tanager.

And this morning when I was about to take off in the golf cart at work ( the Rink)  , I saw an AMERICAN KESTREL male fly unto a electric cord hung between the floodlight towers, but it teetered so much on the shaky wire, it took off for one of the light towers at the rink. Then it flew right after and chased a Northern Flicker. In that same area generally, in trees by the rink cove , at least 8 Eastern Kingbirds in one tree, general evidence that this species is staging for southern calling....

Weekend is looking good but Sunday noon and on into the afternoon in Prospect's Nethermead should be avoided if you intend to bird beyond midmoring. It's a Michael Jackson deejay concert event , and crowds will be predictably large. Bird early . Hot temperatures are predicted so that might be a factor unless cool areas ( near water  i.e) are birded.

From Rafael Campos: (in 5:30 email)

Probably 1 hr ago, I heard some bird noises, quite different for this quiet block in Park Slope.

The squawking was coming from a tall oak tree in the backyard. After a search around the foliage, I found at least 2 Monk Parakeets, perched. This is the first time I see this sps in our backyard. It became our #88 sps for the backyard-list.

Other notables were: 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler, 1 male Northern Cardinal, & 1 Blue Jay.

Brooklyn is good birding: Rafa Campos R.

2nd report

27 August 2010

Just few minutes, an Empidonax sps flycatcher came to the Holly tree in the backyard.

After seeing it for at least 5 minutes, and checking all the potentials field marks, I came with the ID: Acadian Flycatcher.

This represent sps #89 to our backyard list.

Brooklyn is great birding, even your own backyards: Rafa Campos R.

8/26 Prospect --3 rarities reported

Rafael Campos reported a juvenile BLUE GROSBEAK in the vale of cashmere; Acadian Flycatcher at Wellhouse; Yellow-crowned Night-heron in the Lullwater (quite rare for prospect). BTW, Louisiana Waterthrush bumps up the warbler species total to 13 for Thursday.

Kingsboider note/addendum: Yellow-crowned Night heron after a quick records search is only the 14th individual for this species seen  PP... Yay ! good going Rafael......

see his report for 8/26 (yesterday) :
Observer: Rafael Campos R.

After the bad weather, today was an ideal one to visit PP.  As I walked by the Vale, I noticed a large, brownish bird.  I ID it as a juvenal Blue Grosbeak.  As for comparison, in the same area were House Finches & Indigo Buntings.

Warblers:  I noticed today several sps, like Yellow, BT Blue, Redstart, Yellowthroat, Black-and-white, Ovenbird.

At the lake, 1 lonely Forster's Tern + 3 Double-crested Cormorants.

An Empidonax seen behind the Well House, turned into a Acadian.

Late afternoon /evening nightwatch Common Nighthawks 8/26

Prospect Park

Rob Bate reported around 4:45 2 Common Nighthawks over Nellies Lawn. Good potential for more after 6

In addition, he might  have seen a Kentucky Warbler afterwards which is very rare in fall ( I have seen only one autumn sighting in Prospect ), at and below the Esdale Bridge (west entry to Ravine ) this afternoon. Its a great spot where the creek eddies at foliage giving protective cover for birds.  Looking good for morrow..

and today's tally for warblers was 12 species. Lots of flycatchers, typical for late August ( they are congregating)

--Kingsboider.

heading out for nighthawks!

Peter's report  evening nightwatch 6:30-8 pm

Observers Peter and Rob Bate

When I arrived for a sit on the Nethermead triangle 6:30, first thing I saw were swarms of swallows mixed in with swifts..Very good numbers including a dense flock over the west end of the lawn "triangle". Rob bate joined me and eventually I spotted the first COMMON NIGHTHAWK. For the next whole hour, we saw 5 total over the nethermead, including one following a RED-TAILED HAWK! This observation took place as the hawk flew from Lookout Hill's north slope towards the cemetery. On the way out, two more nighthawks flew over the south Lookout section . Total  ended up with 7. Friday eve might be good but I will be at a ballgame in Coney Island...maybe some fly balls might be targets for beach nighthawks

Prospect Aug 26th Birds Coming thru.....

Very decent warbler movement occurred this morning , spurred on by northwest wind, as expected, in several spots from birders reports. At least 12 species warblers were seen including best one YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT seen by Keir , then when this blog posted it, Rob Bate.I will count later the total warbler species. Most amusing though was a report from Keir who sighted a Chukar on Breeze Hill! Of course, its an escape, known as a Chinese delicacy. Takeout anyone?

Chukar---> http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chukar/id

Tonight could be a nice evening for Common Nighthawks. ( we hope so)

8/25 Prospect

First a note about the wind tonight into tomorrow. Winds predicted to be northwest, which spurs birds into migrating during fall. Check "Woodcreeper's" Bird Migration Forecast on the side bar for more on what might occur ------------------>

Also, the upcoming evenings might be a good time to go out into the park and look for Common Nighthawks, a typical late August migrant. the hour before dusk is a good time to sit on the Nethermead or from the Long Meadow near the Upper Pool, where the Ravine and ridge treetops are laden with insects that the nighthawks chase.

here's a flight profile http://tinyurl.com/33u3ngo

additional info  http://www.youtube.com/user/LabofOrnithology#p/u/16/9qpsyjmda5Q

Highlights this late afternoon into evening include Bank and Cliff Swallows among numerous Barn Swallows and Chimney Swifts on Prospect Lake,  juveniles feeding into the northwest sector of the lake. The Cliff Swallow showed a very light rump instead of deeper usual orange. --Kingsboider

August 12th Prospect Green Herons

During a watering spell (for drought affected plants) from my pickup, I happened to be near the Boathouse and remembered Rob Jett's account of the baby Green Heron..So I went to look for it and found the tree easily. But first I saw the parent, then readjusted my view and saw the kid. It was definitely a cute looking fuzzball. I called my coworker over and we received a big surprise.

That surprise was a Red-Tailed Hawk that flew over and perched in an adjoining Oak tree, after a squirrel. Both herons, parent and kid straightened up stiffly , alarmed , watching the Red-tailed, harassed by a Robin. That situation kept the herons fully extended in body , even after the hawk flew off towards the Nethermead.  Quite a moment watching that delightful scene.

On the lake, the usual Forster's Terns complement, 6 birds, three juveniles on the boat mooring apparatus, one more juvenile on a floating driftwood. They don't wanna go; fishing is too darn good on the lake.
